Pre-study

Preliminary musical studies

For whom?

Have you passed the entrance exam in your main subject with flying colors, but your performance in the minor subjects is not yet so good?
Or you have learned music theory and music history in your native language, but you don't yet speak German well enough to follow the lessons?

No problem! We offer a music pre-study program for you.

What do I learn?

The preliminary musical studies range from general music theory to the beginnings of music theory. It begins with music theory, clefs, rests and accidentals, rhythm and time signatures, followed by intervals, circle of fifths and scales (major, minor, harmonic and melodic minor, whole-tone scales, chromatic and pentatonic scales, church and gypsy scales). Triads and their inversions are explained in simple language, as well as cantillation, step theory and basso continuo. You will learn cadences, cadence extensions, function chains and modulations and become familiar with the most common forms such as fugue, sonata form and rondo. You will practise easy to moderately difficult rhythm dictations, listening to intervals and easy melodic dictations.

Finally, in music history, you will gain an overview of the most important composers, musicians and musical works from antiquity, the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern periods, which you will then study in more depth, as well as musical terms that you will encounter every day as a musician, such as allegro con brio, sostenuto, allargando or morendo.
The course lasts two semesters, can be started at the beginning of any semester and comprises three lessons per week.

Each semester of the music preparatory course ends with a written examination and, if passed, a certificate in the student handbook.
